Thinking of Renting a Scooter on Samui? Here’s What You Need to Know
Many visitors to Samui enjoy renting scooters or motorbikes. It’s easy to understand why: the freedom, the wind in your hair, the sun shining, and the ease of getting around. However, riding a scooter on Samui comes with significant risks. Unfortunately, a large number of tourists end up in the hospital here due to scooter and motorbike accidents.
The Reality of Scooter Accidents on Samui
Samui is known for its beautiful scenery, but also for its high accident rate when it comes to scooters. In fact, it's one of the most dangerous places in the world to ride a scooter or motorbike. During my own visit to the hospital for a small injury on my big toe , I witnessed accident victims all around me—many with injuries like scrapes on their arms and legs, often broken but some with serious head injuries.and every day some one dies.
The common thread? Many weren’t wearing helmets. We always recommend wearing a helmet, but unfortunately, over 50% of riders choose to ignore this advice.Alos no one wears protective clothing.
Do You Have a Valid Motorbike License?
Thailand requires a motorbike license to legally ride anything over 50cc. Most tourists don’t have this, and that can lead to major issues. Here’s why:
Insurance Risks: Without a valid motorbike license, your travel insurance might refuse to cover accident-related costs.
Police Fines: Thai police can (and often do) check for licenses, and fines for riding without one are high.
Accident Liability: In the event of an accident, you’re in a weak legal position if you don’t have a license.
Our Recommendation: Stick to Lower CC Bikes
If you’re determined to rent a bike, we recommend choosing one under 50cc. In Thailand, this allows you to legally ride with just a regular car license. However, keep in mind that finding scooters under 50cc can be challenging, as many rental agencies only offer higher-powered models. And for bikes under 50cc, even if you have a special license for small bikes in your home country, it might not be valid in Thailand. You need a motorcycle driving licence to ride any type of motorbike in Thailand. Even if your country may allow you to ride a smaller motorbike.
Rental Agencies and Insurance Issues
Many scooter rental companies on Samui are lenient about checking licenses. They might ask if you have one but rarely verify it. This isn’t in your best interest—if you’re not licensed and get into an accident you are at risk.
Anyway, if you rent a bike, rental agencies will often charge you for every scratch, so take photos of the scooter before riding to document any pre-existing damage.
We unfortunately often help guests to mediate disputes with rental agencies, and this is one reason we, as a resort, don’t directly participate anymore in scooter rentals. We’re happy to provide addresses for companies, but ultimately, the rental agreement is between you and the agency. And they try to charge extras.
Be Informed Before You Ride
Some tourists or rental agencies might tell you that a license isn’t required, but it’s essential to verify this information. Don’t just take their word for it—Google the regulations your self and google will confirm that you need a motorbike license to legally ride on Samui.
